Body Piercing Aftercare

Congratulations on your new piercing. Now, how your piercing heals is up to you. Your skilled and knowledgeable professional piercer cleaned and disinfected the site prior to the procedure, as well as used single-use sterilized needles, piercing implements, and the highest-quality implant-grade surgical stainless steel, titanium or gold jewelry.

It is your responsibility to take appropriate care of your new piercing during the initial healing period. The most important thing you need to do is to clean the new piercing one to two times daily. Use the appropriate cleanser suggested below for the best results of your specific piercing. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE OR ROTATE THE JEWELRY. The purpose of the cleaning is to remove all matter (mostly dead lymph and dead blood cells) that collects on the jewelry and around the piercing during the healing period. Infection or irritation of a new piercing generally occurs because the crusty matter was consciously or accidentally forced into the piercing.

We suggest performing non-iodized sea salt soaks, compresses, and / or gargling with ¼ teaspoon non-iodized sea salt to eight ounces of distilled bottled water, as instructed by your piercer. You may also make a bulk mixture of four to five teaspoons non-iodized sea salt to one gallon of distilled water. Have your mixture in a coffee mug or clean, microwave-safe glass and heat for 15-20 seconds. Soak your piercing in this solution for five to ten minutes at a time, two to three times daily. After soaking is complete, make sure to rinse well with cool water, as to not let the salt dry and crystallize on your skin.

Caution: DO NOT USE ointments, creams, lotions, chemicals, or antibacterial soaps to clean the piercing. The only suggested (and safe) aftercare products are non-iodized sea salt, a gentle antimicrobial skin cleanser, such as Provon, and a gentle antimicrobial, alcohol and sodium-free mouthwash such as H2Ocean. Also, some piercers find that the use of a daily multivitamin with Zinc aids the immune system in the healing of the piercing.
Ear piercing

Upper Body Piercing

Ears, Bridge, Septum, Nostrils, Eyebrows: We suggest you perform your non-iodized sea salt soaks as instructed above, as well as by your piercer, one to two times daily. Clean using a liquid antimicrobial soap one to two times daily at the end of your shower for at least the first eight weeks (some piercings may take longer). Gently scrub the area and site only of the piercing for 15-20 seconds, then rinse off for 30 seconds under the shower. Do not attempt to rotate jewelry or work soap into the piercing, as this may damage healing skin cells. You may pat the area dry after showering with a disposable paper product. DO NOT touch your piercing.

Oral Piercing

Tongue, Lip, Labret, Cheeks: These require special aftercare. Rinse with H2Ocean antimicrobial dental rinse for 60 seconds after anything enters your mouth besides crushed ice or bottled water, but no more than six to eight times a day, as well as following the non-iodized sea salt and upper body piercing aftercare. You may also rinse the inside of your mouth out with your non-iodized sea salt solution. Piercing may swell during the first 24-48 hours, in some cases longer. Drink plenty of cold fluids and use crushed ice to minimize swelling. You may need to continue treatment for four to six weeks, depending on the piercing. Avoid oral contact, hot and spicy foods, the exchange of bodily fluids, smoking, and drinking alcohol for the initial period of swelling.
Lower body piercing

Mid and Lower-Body Piercing

Nipples, Navel, Male, and Female Genital Piercings: Same as upper body, although piercings such as navel, nipples, and some genital piercings may require you to practice your aftercare for a longer period of time.
